Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023 closed with record figures, with 43,000 unique visitors (22,000 in 2022) over the whole week, 5,400 retailers, 125 nationalities, and 35,000 overnight stays, while the number of end-consumers doubled during the first five days.

The number of shares on social networks exceeded all expectations, with 1.8 million posts mentioning #watchesandwonders and an estimated reach of over 600 million people – more than half a billion – an all-time high.

An increase in the number of business visitors

The press recorded an increase of over 50% in attendance with the return of the Asian markets, i.e. a total of 1,400 journalists present in Geneva, with 13,000 registrations for the 1,800 Touch & Feel sessions enabling them to discover and handle the year’s new releases. Not to mention the 2,600 journalists who were able to follow the entire program online.

Retailers racked up more than 8,000 appointments, confirming the unfailing appeal of watchmaking in all its markets, particularly in Europe, which alone accounted for 70% of visitors.

The general public responded massively

All 12,000 tickets were sold out before the weekend started. Aside from the statistics, Watches and Wonders has proven its appeal to the younger generation: 25% of the tickets sold were purchased by people under 25, with an average ticket-holder age of 35. These visitors were particularly attracted to the LAB experience, which offered them a vision of the future of watchmaking. The Salon thus brings together and federates two to three generations at the same watchmaking crossroads.

This hub now extends well beyond Palexpo and offers the Salon new horizons. The “In the City” experience marks an important turning point in the development of Watches and Wonders Geneva, engaging the city and the general public who were drawn by special events in the boutiques and at other points of interest in the watchmaking capital. The Avener’s concert filled the quayside and had both locals and international visitors dancing to the rhythm of watch movements.

During their speeches, Mr. Jean-Frédéric Dufour, President of the Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation – organizer of the Salon – and Mr. Mauro Poggia, President of the State Council of Geneva, emphasized the dynamism and importance of such an event for the watchmaking industry and for the Canton and City of Geneva. They also mentioned the need to speak to future generations and the importance of creating new vocations. It was an opportunity for the industry to come together and speak with one voice.

Twelve dancers from the Geneva Ballet then performed a short excerpt from Ukiyo-e readapted especially for the occasion. Choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

The ceremony ended at 6:00 pm CET with a ribbon cutting.

On April 1 and 2, Watches and Wonders Geneva, the largest watchmaking industry event ever held in Geneva, will open its doors to the public. Tickets can be obtained through the online ticketing at watchesandwonders.com.

Connoisseurs, enthusiasts and those who are simply curious will be able to discover the marvels of the 48 exhibiting Maisons, from the greatest historical watchmakers to independent workshops and artisans. From exceptional pieces and new collections to skilled craftsmanship, there will be something to satisfy every curious mind.

The future of watchmaking will be on show in the LAB area, while the exhibition ‘What time is it?’ by Karine Bauzin will give us a preview of the Swiss photographer’s work on her artistic perception of time. A visit to the Salon will reveal the year’s new creations and other exceptional pieces.

To find out more, head for the Auditorium. Themed talks will cover the key watchmaking news and trends throughout the weekend – in two languages. No registration required. The Salon will also run guided tours for small groups, several times a day.

A festival in three words: In the City

In parallel, for the first time, Watches and Wonders will also be present in the heart of its host City. This festival of watchmaking, called In the City, will be free and open to everyone. Visitors can therefore wander freely through the Rues Basses of the city center and spot the WandW display columns. This will be the sign that the boutiques have surprises in store: including historical pieces, demonstration workshops, a chance to chat with the watchmakers, a preview of new pieces, etc. To add spice to the experience, an interactive watch rally has been organized especially for the occasion. Using the QR codes scattered along a route, the public will be able to discover the participating boutiques and emblematic sites.

When the sun goes down, In the City will continue to beat in the heart of Geneva: on March 30, all the participating boutiques will stay open until 9pm, while a special program has been created for this evening of festivities. Artists, dancers and musicians will take over five stages along the streets, beginning at 5pm. At the Pont de la Machine, a conference on “Geneva, Switzerland and Watchmaking” will be open to all who register. A collection of food trucks will be stationed at the city’s main crossroads with one objective: get ready for a free concert from the celebrated DJ/Producer The Avener at Quai du Général Guisan, at 8pm.

Sites

Sites is dedicated to artistic projects taking place in the heart of Paris. For its first edition, Sites will take place in emblematic settings throughout the city, including the Jardin des Tuileries – Domaine national du Louvre, where 25 sculptures and installations will be exhibited, as well as Place Vendôme, Musée national Eugène-Delacroix and Chapelle des Petits-Augustins des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Applications for Sites at the Jardin des Tuileries are open to all galleries, irrespective of their participation in Paris+ par Art Basel.

Conversations

Curated by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou, and located in the atmospheric Bal de la Marine, a docked boat opposite the Tour Eiffel, the Conversations program will provide a platform for dynamic dialogues between leading figures from the artworld and the broader cultural sphere.

More and more fashion brands are starting to broadcast their new collections online. On December 8, Dior presented a new fall collection during the digital presentation.

Futuristic designs, bold prints, and a contrasting mix of warm and cold shades are shown in the new menswear collection by Dior. The artist Kenny Scharf also contributed to the creation of the fashion line. His work became the basis for several prints.

The third collection of the Russian streetwear brand TSCH ‘Amour et Revolution’ is clothing at the intersection of street subculture and contemporary art.

They say difficult times are an excellent period for the manifestation of fantasy. It happened during the creation of the second TSCH collection, which was during the pandemic.

The situation in the world, especially in the fashion industry, has led to widespread digitalization. Global technological changes in recent years and even months have blurred the boundaries between ‘live’ and ‘digital’, between on and offline. Digital influencers, VR, cryptocurrencies, esports, and entire universes of video games and social media make up a new world. It is often impossible to determine what is real and what is not, and is it necessary to separate these two worlds at all?

The modern reality is changing every second, and the task of design, among other things, is to reflect the current issue.

The main idea behind the technical implementation of the lookbook is mixing the real with the virtual. Models in digital clothes pose against the background of virtual walls and asphalt that mimic streets as much as possible. The interpenetration of two worlds transforms reality and creates a new universe, where both realities exist in close symbiosis, just as it happens in real life.

Friends of the TSCH brand took part in the shooting by Eric Panov with the main character of the lookbook, charismatic actor Nikita Kukushkin.

“Working with TSCH was very easy and effortless. I immediately felt that they are burning with what they do. They are not afraid to try new formats and keep up with the times, and perhaps even be ahead of everyone”.

The process of working on the digital lookbook for Amour et Revolution took place in several stages: first, digital patterns of the collection were created, then avatars (characters corresponding to the parameters of the models). Next – posing and skinning, as a result of which the clothes were “tied” to the avatar. After that, the 3D designer worked through all the details of the new collection, brought together 3D and 2D images, and added graphic elements and video effects.

The collection includes a hoodie with the words “Love and Peace”, a cropped cotton hoodie, long sleeve with neon print, loose-fitting trousers, as well as accessories – a black panama in the style of the 1990s and a staple scarf created in collaboration with “Russian Post.”

Why is the collection called “Love and Revolution”?

“During the period of modern turbulence, the world changes every second.
Each of us daily faces obstacles, overcomes them, re-evaluates values ​​, and forms our own. Self-expression, as an integral part of the personality, is enclosed in a unique form of an internal Revolution. And for each person it is special,” – the creators of the brand, Sergey Chemezov, and Thomas Schlosser, comment: “TSCH Revolution is not a protest, but a transformation and manifesto. It would be right to ask: “Not against, but for what? What drives us, and why are all revolutions born?” TSCH Amour is a fundamental part of the creative personality, and it has an infinite number of forms: towards itself, towards its surroundings, towards the world in general. In our collection, we would like to remind people once again that a great creative force is in each of us.”
