Miami-based Doroni has started to accept pre-orders for its “personal” flying machines. The company recently showed off the cockpit of its H1 aircraft at the EAA AirVenture in Wisconsin, using VR headsets to simulate takeoff, flight and landing.

Doroni is going after a different market than most eVTOL manufacturers, which are building air taxis for intra-city use. Instead, it’s targeting personal pilots, much like the Jetson, with an aircraft it claims will be intuitive and much easier to fly than a helicopter or conventional airplane.

Company officials yesterday said in a webinar that they plan to “democratize” general aviation with a “semi-autonomous” aircraft designed for safety. CEO Doron Merdinger said anyone with a standard car driver’s license and 20-hour training course should be able to fly the H1.

The two-seat flying car has two sets of wings with large ducted fans, a 500-pound payload, and wheels—this last feature is unusual since most eVTOLs usually land on pads. The H1 is designed to drive into a standard garage and recharge overnight.

The curves on the fuselage and large fans give the H1 a futuristic but equally retro look. The H1 is expected to have a range of 60 miles, with a top speed of 140 mph. Merdinger said the battery can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes. It will also have a parachute for safety.

The company is building its first two prototypes at a new facility in Miami, with the goal of completing the first full-scale flying model in the next few months.

Doroni plans for the H1 to be certified as a Light Sport Aircraft with the FAA so it will fit into an existing category, unlike most new eVTOL aircraft that will have to undergo certification processes in new categories.

Deliveries of the aircraft, said the company, will begin in the fourth quarter of 2024. It plans to take 36 pre-orders. According to its website, there are 19 build slots left. The H1’s starting price will be $150,000.

Initial feedback from exhibitors and yachting media reports all point to a positive and encouraging conclusion: the MYS has risen up to the industry-wide challenge set forth a few months ago, by building the show around the visitors’ experience and that of (future) yacht buyers in particular.

Gaëlle Tallarida, General Director of the MYS: “We worked alongside stakeholders from across the industry in order to put on a show that meets the latter’s expectations and, more specifically, those of their clientele. The 2021 MYS appears to have benefited from the excitement spurred by this reunion, as well as from the favourable state of the market, with an increase in yacht sales over the last 18 months: clients have turned to yachting to escape the gloomy context that the pandemic has brought about and the frustration of having their freedom restricted. Therefore, 2021 has been a win-win for everyone involved in yachting. Thanks to the steering committee founded this year, we intend to pursue our collaboration in order to further improve the MYS for the 2022 edition”.

In 2021, the exhibition appeared more diverse than ever, thus disproving the cautious predictions made by the organisers at the beginning of the summer. Week after week, the show came to life in sync with the increasing general excitement. While 300 exhibitors and a maximum of 90 yachts had originally been announced, the 2021 MYS featured 440 exhibitors and 101 superyachts, half of which were launched in 2020 and 2021, reaching an estimated total worth of €3.6 billion at the start of the show. Featured yachts included 37 new launches and 14 superyachts measuring over 70m in length.

19 000 visitors: Less is more

Travel constraints and health regulations partly explain the drop in attendance on Monaco’s quaysides, but a reduced turnout had in fact been expected and planned for by the organisers. Their objective was to decrease the number of visitors, whilst focusing on specific profiles and thereby facilitating connections between exhibitors and their targeted clientele.

The MYS also benefitted from more clear-cut themed exhibition areas, thus improving the visitors’ experience: on the first day of the show (accessible upon invitation only), yacht owners and future yacht buyers and charterers – 300 of whom were invited by the MYS organisers – enjoyed an exclusive and therefore more pleasant access to the Dockside Area. Here, they discovered a wide variety of yachts and tenders and met designers, brokers and shipyards. In the air-conditioned tents set up on Quai Antoine Ier, yacht owner representatives, advisors (who also had access to the Dockside Area on Day 1) and visitors from within the industry were able to further exchange with attending equipment manufacturers and luxury brands.

According to the show’s yacht builders and brokers, their visiting schedules were full from the very start of the event and potential clients came on board with serious intent to buy. This trend certainly fits in with the current rise in yacht sales.

Builders remain confident that the new MYS format will eventually bring enormous added value to the industry. Theo Hooning, Secretary General of SYBAss (an association of 40+ metre yacht builders): “The 2021 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show was the first opportunity to see the results of a change in approach to the show, by placing the focus firmly on the customers of the industry rather than the business activities within it. The result was a more relaxed atmosphere, and with no overcrowding of the quays the experience for those customers was much more in line with the superyacht experience itself. It is important that we capitalise on this opportunity and continue on our chosen path, improving where necessary. In this way, the Monaco Yacht Show will maintain its important and high-profile role both by showcasing the unique products shaped by the industry and also by promoting the superyacht lifestyle”.

The Monaco Yacht Show: The key to the yachting world
The day before the show, the 5th edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit – which has become a yearly staple here – welcomed some sixty owners, charterers and future buyers (or their representatives) in a positively confidential setup. Before visiting the show the following day, participants had the opportunity to talk with various speakers, designers, brokers and builders, gleaning essential information in order to safely embark on their yacht construction, chartering or purchasing projects.

Meeting designers and sailboat builders
Among the new additions to the 2021 MYS, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub offered visitors a better understanding of a custom yacht’s construction process and a look into the future of superyacht design, thanks to lectures by designers Espen Øino, Luiz De Basto Designs, Sam Sorgiovanni, Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design and Winch Design. This interactive space also allowed attending designers to present their work, giving visitors an opportunity to meet the experts who will design their future yacht.

The new Sailing Yacht Area featured no less than 12 large sailing yachts. A fitting number, given that sail boats currently represent 15% of the world’s yachting fleet. This space dedicated to sailing yachts targeted a new yachting clientele, showcasing the benefits of a sportier and more environmentally friendly way of sailing, whilst still enjoying the same level of comfort, technology and facilities as on board motor yachts.

​​​​​​​The success of the 2021 MYS was all but a foregone conclusion: despite a favourable and flourishing market, the pandemic made exhibitors’ participation and the unfolding of the show itself quite uncertain.

The very real enthusiasm that filled Port Hercule is therefore a sure sign that the MYS remains a powerful vector for promoting and marketing yachting activities.

On Thursday, September 23rd, an Official Presentation was organized with a real-world premiere of two prototypes of cars made especially for this event, ÈTÈ and MIG20 and other trendy and innovative sea tools such as ALA50, ÈTÈ and JETMIG.

This international presentation marked the Brand rebirth with the entry of a new President, Bogdan Skutkiewicz, and a new CEO, Giorgio Stirano, who support Fulvio Maria Ballabio, Founder and Ambassador of the brand, guarantor of a commitment renewed over the years and which, thanks to the new upcoming projects, is going to reach a new level of excellence.

The organisers of the MYS have presently confirmed that 300 exhibitors will be participating. They have also announced that nearly 60 superyachts will be exhibited, including 40 brand-new launches by some of the most famous shipyards – not to mention regulars here at the MYS – including: Benetti, Feadship, Lürssen, Oceanco, etc. (full list at the end of the press release).

As announced last February, the show will be focusing on offering superyacht’s end clientele a positively upmarket visiting experience.

The new Dockside Area, a part of the exhibition dedicated to companies directly linked with the construction or management of superyachts and tenders, will therefore be exclusively open to end customers (in possession of a “Discover”, “Advise” and “Sapphire Experience” passes) on Wednesday 22 September, before being opened up to all visitors starting Thursday.

The Dockside Area fits in perfectly with the way Monaco’s Port Hercule is divided up for the show: for several years now, each area of the exhibition has featured its own theme in order to better meet the visitors’ expectations.

A more varied exhibition
This year, visitors will be treated to two new exhibitions:
The first is dedicated to sailing boats, held on Quai l’Hirondelle where several crafts will be moored opposite the stands representing their respective shipyards, designers and specialist equipment manufacturers.

In addition to the show’s historic Designer Gallery, the MYS will feature a Yacht Design & Innovation Hub: a new space for the presentation of yacht design projects where visitors can also interact with designers.

These two areas perfectly complement the luxury tender and water toys exhibitions at Tender & Toys (Quai Antoine Ier), in addition to luxury cars at the Car Deck (Quai Antoine Ier), luxury products (Parvis Piscine tent), nautical equipment manufacturers and the latest tech releases (Darse Sud and Quai Albert Ier).

Rest assured: the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show will be “Covid-safe”!
An anti-Covid sanitary protocol will be respected throughout the entire show, from the first day of preparations to the dismantling of the last stand and, of course, during the 4 days of the show.

General Manager of the exhibition Gaëlle Tallarida stated:
“We are following the evolution of the pandemic very closely, as well as the sanitary constraints applied in each of our visitors’ home countries. The 2022 edition is set to confirm the status of the MYS’s “seducation” programme, which was launched last year. This three-year plan of action is designed to attract a new generation of yachting clients, thanks to two core concepts: “education” and “seduction” (aka “seducation”).

Education: meeting trade experts in themed exhibition areas

The show’s themed exhibition areas have been redistributed more efficiently, making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective fields and to discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project.

The organisers are therefore revamping the Dockside Area, the Sailing Yacht Area and the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, all three of which were launched in 2021.

Be it in the water or on the docks, the Dockside Area features superyachts, tenders and all manner of services directly related to the world of yachting. Visitors can meet the shipbrokers, shipyards and designers who worked on the various yachts on display.

The Sailing Yacht Area will be relocated to Quai l’Hirondelle, on the inner side of Port Hercule.

The Yacht Design & Innovation Hub – dedicated to future yacht design projects – is set to triple in size, including a 100-m² upstairs conference area.

These areas will complement the show’s other themed exhibitions:

Seduction: an initiation to the superyachting way of life

The Monaco Yacht Show aims to offer more comprehensive first dip into the world of superyachting. The Sapphire Experience offers concierge services – i.e. directly organising yacht visits hand-in-hand with exhibitors – and a range of other VIP activities and services throughout the show.

The first day of the show (Wednesday 28 September) will be on invitation-only. Private clients – holding “Discover” passes or “Sapphire Experience” passes (the show’s official visit programme) – and their parties (“Advise” passes) will be granted privileged access to the Dockside Area while the other areas will remain open to all passes. From Thursday 29 September, the Dockside Area will be open to the public.
