Watches and Wonders Geneva closes its 2023 edition with results that exceed expectations and best forecasts. All of its indicators are well above previous editions. The Salon confirms its trajectory as well as its position on the world watchmaking scene, thanks to controlled growth and a common voice.
The innovations were numerous, as were the expectations. Watches and Wonders has redoubled in creativity, innovation and openness in order to keep pace with a rapidly growing global watch market (24.8 billion Swiss francs in 2022).

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023 closed with record figures, with 43,000 unique visitors (22,000 in 2022) over the whole week, 5,400 retailers, 125 nationalities, and 35,000 overnight stays, while the number of end-consumers doubled during the first five days.

The number of shares on social networks exceeded all expectations, with 1.8 million posts mentioning #watchesandwonders and an estimated reach of over 600 million people – more than half a billion – an all-time high.

An increase in the number of business visitors

The press recorded an increase of over 50% in attendance with the return of the Asian markets, i.e. a total of 1,400 journalists present in Geneva, with 13,000 registrations for the 1,800 Touch & Feel sessions enabling them to discover and handle the year’s new releases. Not to mention the 2,600 journalists who were able to follow the entire program online.

Retailers racked up more than 8,000 appointments, confirming the unfailing appeal of watchmaking in all its markets, particularly in Europe, which alone accounted for 70% of visitors.

The general public responded massively

All 12,000 tickets were sold out before the weekend started. Aside from the statistics, Watches and Wonders has proven its appeal to the younger generation: 25% of the tickets sold were purchased by people under 25, with an average ticket-holder age of 35. These visitors were particularly attracted to the LAB experience, which offered them a vision of the future of watchmaking. The Salon thus brings together and federates two to three generations at the same watchmaking crossroads.

This hub now extends well beyond Palexpo and offers the Salon new horizons. The “In the City” experience marks an important turning point in the development of Watches and Wonders Geneva, engaging the city and the general public who were drawn by special events in the boutiques and at other points of interest in the watchmaking capital. The Avener’s concert filled the quayside and had both locals and international visitors dancing to the rhythm of watch movements.

The official inauguration of Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023 was held on Monday, March 27 at 5:30 pm CET at Palexpo in the presence of representatives of the cantonal and municipal authorities and the 48 CEOs of the exhibiting Maisons.

During their speeches, Mr. Jean-Frédéric Dufour, President of the Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation – organizer of the Salon – and Mr. Mauro Poggia, President of the State Council of Geneva, emphasized the dynamism and importance of such an event for the watchmaking industry and for the Canton and City of Geneva. They also mentioned the need to speak to future generations and the importance of creating new vocations. It was an opportunity for the industry to come together and speak with one voice.

Twelve dancers from the Geneva Ballet then performed a short excerpt from Ukiyo-e readapted especially for the occasion. Choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

The ceremony ended at 6:00 pm CET with a ribbon cutting.

Watches and Wonders Geneva: A few days before the opening, what not to miss!

For the first time, the organizers have designed a two-part program: In the Salon at Palexpo and In the City in central Geneva. This rich and original program by day and by night will make Geneva the watchmaking destination par excellence. It will unveil the most hidden aspects of the industry’s craftsmanship and expertise, without ever losing sight of the new creations for 2023. Follow the Guide!

On April 1 and 2, Watches and Wonders Geneva, the largest watchmaking industry event ever held in Geneva, will open its doors to the public. Tickets can be obtained through the online ticketing at watchesandwonders.com.

Connoisseurs, enthusiasts and those who are simply curious will be able to discover the marvels of the 48 exhibiting Maisons, from the greatest historical watchmakers to independent workshops and artisans. From exceptional pieces and new collections to skilled craftsmanship, there will be something to satisfy every curious mind.

The future of watchmaking will be on show in the LAB area, while the exhibition ‘What time is it?’ by Karine Bauzin will give us a preview of the Swiss photographer’s work on her artistic perception of time. A visit to the Salon will reveal the year’s new creations and other exceptional pieces.

To find out more, head for the Auditorium. Themed talks will cover the key watchmaking news and trends throughout the weekend – in two languages. No registration required. The Salon will also run guided tours for small groups, several times a day.

A festival in three words: In the City

In parallel, for the first time, Watches and Wonders will also be present in the heart of its host City. This festival of watchmaking, called In the City, will be free and open to everyone. Visitors can therefore wander freely through the Rues Basses of the city center and spot the WandW display columns. This will be the sign that the boutiques have surprises in store: including historical pieces, demonstration workshops, a chance to chat with the watchmakers, a preview of new pieces, etc. To add spice to the experience, an interactive watch rally has been organized especially for the occasion. Using the QR codes scattered along a route, the public will be able to discover the participating boutiques and emblematic sites.

When the sun goes down, In the City will continue to beat in the heart of Geneva: on March 30, all the participating boutiques will stay open until 9pm, while a special program has been created for this evening of festivities. Artists, dancers and musicians will take over five stages along the streets, beginning at 5pm. At the Pont de la Machine, a conference on “Geneva, Switzerland and Watchmaking” will be open to all who register. A collection of food trucks will be stationed at the city’s main crossroads with one objective: get ready for a free concert from the celebrated DJ/Producer The Avener at Quai du Général Guisan, at 8pm.

The heart of Geneva will be beating to the rhythm of watch movements from March 27 to April 2, 2023. The wonder of watchmaking is within everyone’s reach!

This New Electric ‘Flying Car’ Can Be Piloted With a Driver’s License – and It Will Fit in Your Garage

With its intuitive cockpit, Doroni says you only need 20 hours of flight training and a license to fly its H1.

Miami-based Doroni has started to accept pre-orders for its “personal” flying machines. The company recently showed off the cockpit of its H1 aircraft at the EAA AirVenture in Wisconsin, using VR headsets to simulate takeoff, flight and landing.

Doroni is going after a different market than most eVTOL manufacturers, which are building air taxis for intra-city use. Instead, it’s targeting personal pilots, much like the Jetson, with an aircraft it claims will be intuitive and much easier to fly than a helicopter or conventional airplane.

Company officials yesterday said in a webinar that they plan to “democratize” general aviation with a “semi-autonomous” aircraft designed for safety. CEO Doron Merdinger said anyone with a standard car driver’s license and 20-hour training course should be able to fly the H1.

The two-seat flying car has two sets of wings with large ducted fans, a 500-pound payload, and wheels—this last feature is unusual since most eVTOLs usually land on pads. The H1 is designed to drive into a standard garage and recharge overnight.

The curves on the fuselage and large fans give the H1 a futuristic but equally retro look. The H1 is expected to have a range of 60 miles, with a top speed of 140 mph. Merdinger said the battery can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes. It will also have a parachute for safety.

The company is building its first two prototypes at a new facility in Miami, with the goal of completing the first full-scale flying model in the next few months.

Doroni plans for the H1 to be certified as a Light Sport Aircraft with the FAA so it will fit into an existing category, unlike most new eVTOL aircraft that will have to undergo certification processes in new categories.

Deliveries of the aircraft, said the company, will begin in the fourth quarter of 2024. It plans to take 36 pre-orders. According to its website, there are 19 build slots left. The H1’s starting price will be $150,000.

Conversations

Curated by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou, and located in the atmospheric Bal de la Marine, a docked boat opposite the Tour Eiffel, the Conversations program will provide a platform for dynamic dialogues between leading figures from the artworld and the broader cultural sphere.

Monaco Yacht Show 2022: the official list of superyachts is announced

Today, the Monaco Yacht Show publishes its first list of superyachts that will be exhibited in Port Hercule in two months.

The show organisers assure that other units will extend this list by September 28, the opening day of the show. The list is evolving every day with new entries. Indeed, brokers are used to confirming the participation of their superyachts available for purchase or charter a few weeks before the show opening.

Over a hundred superyachts will therefore be expected at the show. Today (as of August 3, 2022), 32 yachts published on the MYS website are new builds (2022) unveiled in Monaco by their builders.

A range of superyachts for all tastes!
Private owners wishing to change their yachts – or to purchase a new one! -, charterers or new pleasure-seeking visitors tempted by a first superyacht experience, all will be seduced by the varied collection of yachts on display this year in the Dockside Area: vessels starting from 22 metres in length, among which ten sailing yachts (four are new deliveries) confirmed in the Sailing Yacht Area.

The MYS also announces its list of tenders on its website. Here too, the organisers are still waiting for confirmation of additional units in the coming weeks to complete the fifty or so tenders on display. While the tenders are now part of the new Adventure Area exhibition, they will continue to be exhibited on two sites (Quai Jarlan and Quai Antoine Ier).

The Monaco Yacht Show launches its Adventure Area

The Adventure Area is the Monaco Yacht Show’s new themed exhibition dedicated to adventure, exploration and all manner of leisure activities on board a yacht.

From 28 September to 1 October, the MYS new Adventure Area is set to boast a vast range of day-trip and sports tenders, luxury and off-road vehicles, water toys, high-tech gadgets, helicopters and tailor-made programmes to explore the planet’s most remote destinations.

The exhibition will span across two sites at Monaco’s Port Hercule: Quai Antoine Ier, which previously featured the Car Deck and Tenders & Toys exhibitions, is now home to the Adventure Area that combines the two themes in a single location, boasting a myriad of luxury vehicles, tenders and water toys for visitors to discover; secondly, as in previous editions, around twenty tenders will be moored at Quai Jarlan.

This extended exhibition for all adventure and leisure activities reflects the MYS’ continued ambition to bring visitors the finest yachting experience. Today, charter clients want to drive all-terrain vehicles to the North Pole, go on underwater excursions, take tender rides off the coast of secluded islands, enjoy tailor-made tours of historical and cultural sites in coastal destinations, discover animal species – while respecting their ecosystems – and even take part in scientific field trips.

The Monaco Yacht Show’s new exhibition area dedicated to sustainable yachting solutions

The 2022 Monaco Yacht Show will mark the unveiling of the Sustainability Hub: this new exhibition area will welcome companies that specialise in technology aimed at reducing superyachts’ environmental footprint.

The Sustainability Hub is an incubator for companies that provide innovative or tried-and-true eco-friendly solutions, as well as for budding start-ups working on sustainable alternatives that fit in seamlessly with the yachting world. The exhibition will be located on 200m² in Darse Sud, the tent dedicated to nautical equipment and technology.

The Monaco Yacht Show announces its collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation in order to select companies that are eligible for the Sustainability Hub.

The Sustainability Hub was created as part of the Monaco Yacht Show’s eco-friendly approach, which was initiated in 2005. The show thereby serves as a tool to raise awareness on environmental issues within the Monegasque and international yachting community.

Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the MYS: “When the MYS joined the Carbon Neutral programme in 2005, we were already hell-bent on raising environmental awareness. The MYS later joined the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in 2010 to support their eco-friendly projects. Might I remind you that the yachting industry had barely started taking on a “green attitude” at the time. Our pioneering approach to sustainability in organising the show, which began 18 years ago, now extends to a new dedicated exhibition at the MYS. The MYS constitutes one of the industry’s major voices; a share of social responsibility that we fully assume today. This brand new area dedicated to eco-friendly yachting alternatives is part of our sustainability programme, which is set to be extended to the logistics and layout of the entire show, here in the port of Monaco. We intend to provide support to all those involved – exhibitors, service providers and visitors alike – whilst exploring concrete solutions to environmental problems.”
