The inaugural edition of Paris+ par Art Basel will bring together 156 leading French and international galleries to present exceptional artworks across all media – from painting and sculpture to photography and digital works. From curated presentations of 20th century masterpieces to solo booths by emerging artists, Paris+ par Art Basel will present a global showcase of the highest quality, firmly embedded in Paris and its cultural scene.

Sites

Sites is dedicated to artistic projects taking place in the heart of Paris. For its first edition, Sites will take place in emblematic settings throughout the city, including the Jardin des Tuileries – Domaine national du Louvre, where 25 sculptures and installations will be exhibited, as well as Place Vendôme, Musée national Eugène-Delacroix and Chapelle des Petits-Augustins des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Applications for Sites at the Jardin des Tuileries are open to all galleries, irrespective of their participation in Paris+ par Art Basel.

Conversations

Curated by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou, and located in the atmospheric Bal de la Marine, a docked boat opposite the Tour Eiffel, the Conversations program will provide a platform for dynamic dialogues between leading figures from the artworld and the broader cultural sphere.

Today, the art industry is actively using modern technology: virtual exhibitions, fairs, and online auctions are held worldwide. Christie’s announced the launching of a new and unique auction that will be the first of its kind. The auction will be on July 10, 2020.

Hong Kong, Paris, London, and New York will take part in the relay-style auction: bidding will be broadcast in real-time, and each city will participate one by one. The organizers of the event ‘ONE: A Global Sale of the 20th Century’ believe that this format will help to create a convenient and inclusive platform for bidders around the world.

Those who will attend the Hong Kong session will have the chance to become owners of Zao Wou-Ki’s work, 21.10.63. The artwork was painted by the artist during his Hurricane Period. It was a period when Zao Wou-Ki achieved virtuosity in his performance.

At the New York session, the artwork Nude with Joyous Painting by Roy Lichtenstein will have its auction debut. The artist continued working on this series up until his death.

The bidders will be able to attend the auction, both personally and through the Christie’s Live online service. The bidding will begin in Hong Kong at 20:00 local time. There also will be a pre-sale public exhibition in each city before the auction.

After a successful example of digital Art Basel Hong Kong, the organizers of the contemporary art fair Frieze New York decided to host the event on an online platform. At the moment, many galleries have publicly revealed their high sales figures.

The Frieze New York offers customers a convenient way to use the online platform: each visitor can thoroughly learn about the artworks, as well as try out how the pieces will look on the wall at home or in the office. Customers using the platform can filter the artworks by medium and price. A lot of galleries have found this new feature acceptable and convenient. According to the director of the Gagosian Gallery, this decision has simplified the interaction between the gallery and the customer by making the purchase process more transparent.

The artworks exhibited by the galleries at the fair received a positive response from art dealers and collectors. David Zwirner Gallery presented 28 works by various authors, one of which was the painting by Susan Frecon, which was already sold for $400,000.

Acquavella Galleries exhibited the work of Jean Michel Basquiat, which was worth 5.5 million dollars, and the Hauser and Wirth gallery revealed the sale of the painting created by George Condo to an American collector for $2 million.

As its first action under the umbrella of #artforbetter, Hauser & Wirth will donate 10 percent of profits from its online exhibitions to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO, beginning with the upcoming online exhibition ‘George Condo. Drawings for Distanced Figures,’ launching this Friday. 

Upcoming online exhibitions will include solo presentations of new works by Lorna Simpson and Rashid Johnson. The WHO’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund is a global effort helping countries to prevent, detect, and respond to the coronavirus pandemic, in order to ensure all nations are prepared, especially those with the weakest health care systems.

Iwan Wirth says: ‘In discussions with the Hauser & Wirth family, including our artists, over these past difficult weeks, it became clear that these critical times demand a charitable response. We see ourselves as members of a worldwide community, and our support of the World Health Organization is a way to participate in an immediate humanitarian effort that supersedes borders. Salvador Dali is an iconic figure in art history. By being eccentric and irrational he made creativity the center of his world. A new exhibition “Salvador Dali. Magic Art” was opened at the Manege Central Exhibition Hall on January 28. The exhibition was organized by the Link of Times Foundation and the Fabergé Museum in partnership with the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation (Figueres) and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid). The curator Monce Ager, director of the Dali Museums, brought to Moscow over 180 works, many of which have not been shown before.

The exhibition allows you to find out how a strange Spanish boy became a recognized genius. The exposition shows the paintings that the artist had created throughout his life: from impressionist landscapes he made in his youth in the 1910s to his final abstract canvases from the 1980s. One of the significant works at the exhibition is the stereoscopic diptych “Dalí Seen from the Back Painting Gala from the Back Eternalized by Six Virtual Corneas Provisionally Reflected by Six Real Mirrors”. This piece of art represents the period when the artist introduced science to his painting, creating his famous optical illusions.

The exhibition also features a series of engravings illustrating Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and illustrations to his own book “50 Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship”.

But why is the exhibition called “Magic Art”? Painting has always been a magical art for Salvador Dali: the artist admired the technical perfection and the masters of the Renaissance. The viewer can see that Dali was influenced by them while creating his later works.

The exhibition also offers his guests an educational program: the lectures, which will help the viewer to understand the art of the painter, are organized on Thursdays. On the official website you can find a detailed schedule of films and workshops for children and adults.

Between January 23 and May 4 everyone has a chance to order some tasty pastry and coffee at one of the world’s oldest confectionary,  Confiserie Zurcher, and enjoy Yulia Ilieva’s exhibition at the same time. What can be better than some sweets alongside high art? The new series, currently on display in Montreux, combines abstract shapes and characters full of life and motion encouraging the viewer to embrace the present moment and to focus on their feelings as opposed to hiding them. This is an original view of sleek ballerinas who look nothing like those of Edgar Degas. Yulia’s dancers captured in the middle of a performance are full of emotions and the aesthetic of wavy lines.

‘In this series ballet artists were my inspiration. I remember being greatly impressed by photos of a well-known dancer captured in a jump. I wanted to convey this grade of internal freedom, expression of gestures, beauty of motion which is so abundant in ballet, in my paintings. I turned to an old friend of mine, Alexander Filkin who specializes in ballet photography. He enjoyed the idea and shared a lot of materials to help me make my ideas come true. Thus, my paintings now show silhouettes of a Boston Ballet soloist, artists of Ballet Ireland, and a soloist of Buryatia Ballet among others. It is an immense pleasure to get inspired by the work of highly talented people’, the artist comments.

Artist’s profile: Yulia Ilieva did not take up art right off the bat. She started the search for her true self in law school. Later on, she worked in Citigroup as a consulting legal expert. However, as it happens to creative people, her life did a 180. The artist could not bear going with no art in her life. She would not see herself without paintings and a flow of inspiration. Back in 2005 she enrolled in a two-year history of arts course at the Russian State University for The Humanities in Moscow. A couple of years later, she graduated from Perrotti Russian-Italian art school. Yulia draws inspiration not just from within, but also from what surrounds her. It has always been clear to the artist that fresh emotions and new images could only appear in foreign lands, new environments, and unseen landscapes. In 2011 the artist moved to Switzerland with her family, and to this day she resides in Montreux, on the shores of Lake Geneva.

‘I love painting immersing myself into my work. I heard about fear of an empty canvas. This is not the case for me. Instead, I love filling it in. This is the joy of experiment. The joy of improvisation. A feeling of travel and the unknown. This is a moment of filling the canvas with colours with quick brushstrokes, creation of a multi-layered composition and a deep space to host the story. This is a strong cooperation with the work, a mutual immersion, and circulating energy. I am convinced the viewers are able to perceive this energy as a code’, Yulia explains.

A combination of structured backdrops, transparent figures, and layers of bright colours convey what the artist has tried to depict for many years, plasticity of motion, energy, and a flow of inner strength not confined by a body.

‘This is an exhibition of a new series of my works finished in a style and technique I haven’t used before. I came up with the idea as I was experimenting with various artistic materials, media, large formats, and, last but never least, newer sources of inspiration. This is some sort of a result of my artistic findings in the course of my impressionist and botanical art periods. I’ve always been fascinated by the very first moment of creating a painting, the sketch. Bold and lively lines full of energy. Most of the time I wanted to leave the drawing as it was instead of going on. This is how I came up with the idea of conveying the sketch in a painting’, Yulia continues.

‘I use acrylic paint, dry and oil pastel, large and flat brushes, and rolls of different sizes. These materials let me work with larger formats, make transparent backdrop layers, convey motion and pulse in a still image, and indicate the direction. I want to keep the viewer looking at my paintings, travelling around my picture, enjoying it and witnessing the change of the painting’s state, watching it open up and become even richer’, the artist says.

Confiserie Zurcher that hosts the exhibition used to be a venue favoured by Vladimir Nabokov. Praline, truffles, and other delicacies were the author’s favourite food as he resided in Montreux. In the mornings he loved spending several hours working, and later going for a walk along the shore, and getting some sweets at his favourite confectionary with his wife Vera. If the weather was good, having enjoyed his sweets, Nabokov would go catch butterflies in the mountains. We wondered as to why the most favourite spot of a Russian author attracted another fellow Russian some 50 years later.

‘I live 5 minutes from Montreux, right on the lake. Confiserie Zurhcer is one of the oldest places in the town. IT’s been there since 1879. I go there quite often. It is a historic place with its own unique atmosphere. It sells wonderful desserts which are true culinary masterpieces. One of the halls hosts regular exhibitions of various artists. I met the owner and great-granddaughter of the founder, Anne Ralph-Zurcher. She liked my works, and we arranged the exhibition’, Yulia replies.

Should you plan to visit Switzerland, do come over to the confectionary for some chocolate with truffles and inspiration from Yulia Ilieva. If the weather is good enough, pack a butterfly net.
