Anna shared her assumptions about how the fashion industry is going to change after the pandemic.

Anna Wintour believes that the fashion industry needs to slow down: in the era of overconsumption, people no longer notice that fashion is mostly art. Anna claims that it is time to focus on craft and creativity.

In the interview, the editor-in-chief also noted how important it is to support each other during this difficult time. The current CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund charity initiative aims to support designers, retailers, and all people within a fashion industry affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. “I feel very strongly that when we come out at the other end, which we will do, the people’s values are going to have shifted. I think it is an opportunity for all of us to look at our industry and our lives, and to rethink our values.”

Anna Wintour spoke about the postponement of the opening of the exhibition About Time and the traditional Met Gala dedicated to it. Most likely, the famous event will be held in October.

Anna admitted that now, like many others, she misses a human connection, and to keep herself in great physical shape, the editor-in-chief took up running.

Good afternoon, Laura. What a cozy and relaxing place you have here in Beauty Bistro!

Thank you! The comfort of our guests always comes first. We try to make the atmosphere in our space warm and comfortable, just like at home. Many guests come to us not only to have the procedure done but also to spend some quality time in a good company.

Beauty Bistro

Laura, how did you come up with an idea to create Beauty Bistro?

It all has started with this place. I saw the space and realized that it is the right place to pursue my dreams. A while later, I met several wonderful girls who became a part of my team. We created Beauty Bistro together, and we truly cherish it.

What inspired you while launching the project?

My team inspires me: many people have been working with us since the first day. We support each other, often attend training, organize events, and trips for team building. I am also inspired by Beauty Bistro, having a unique style. We are trying to follow trends and to offer the customers only the products and procedures that we know and love.

Laura Koreneva, who is a founder of Beauty Bistro

Did you face any difficulties while starting a business?

Believe it or not, we did not have any trouble. While launching my first project, I did not have any doubts. I truly believed that everything would work out and was going to be alright. In the end, my ideas turned out as I planned. I now have a cozy space in the center of Moscow and a supporting team.

What are the main criteria for selecting brands to work within Beauty Bistro?

We regularly follow trends and look for new releases. At the same time, we thoroughly review the products. The first important criterion is the brand’s philosophy. If the general concept shares my values, we instantly get in touch and collaborate. We have a lot of Australian brands represented in Beauty Bistro. Children and pregnant women can easily use their products. While selecting a new brand, I also look for aesthetics – I like when the package, all of the tubes and bottles, pleases the eye.

Beauty Bistro

Beauty Bistro

What new brands will soon appear in Beauty Bistro?

I am personally looking forward to a new brand that we are going to show our guests in March. It is a French brand called Manicurist that produces an eco-friendly gel polish. The product is based on natural ingredients and does not cause any skin rash. The polish can also be easily removed at home.

Laura, could you share your favorite cosmetic procedures with us?

At Beauty Bistro, we do a hair treatment called Happiness. I adore it and try doing it every two weeks. I always advise taking care of hair: by doing it regularly, you will have healthy and thick hair in no time. I often spoil myself with hand treatments as well. We mostly use La Ric cosmetics during manicure in Beauty Bistro. And, of course, I do not forget to treat myself with a back massage.

Beautiful Lifestyle sat down with Maria Melia to talk about her new book “Leave your Kids Alone: Simple Rules of Wise Parents” and how to bring up your children when all of the time is spent on business.

Marina Melia is a professor of psychology, founder of MM Class consulting company, consulting coach for Russia’s top entrepreneurs, and USSR master of cycling and ski sports. Marina Melia is the best-selling author of “Business Is Psychology: Modern Businessman’s Psychological Coordinates”, “How to Make Your Strength Stronger: Coaching”, “Success Is a Personal Matter: How Not to Get Lost in the Modern World”, and “Complex Matters Explained Simply”.

Marina Melia is a mother of three. Based on her personal and professional experience she wrote two books on bringing up children: “The Main Secret of the First Year of Life” and “Our Poor Rich Children”. The third book of the series, “Leave Your Kids Alone! Simple Rules of Wise Parents”, has been recently published.

Marina sat down with the editor of our “Psychology” section, Anna Sarmatina, to talk about the challenges of bringing up children in wealthy families and charity.

– Marina, thank you for letting us interview you! Could you please tell us how you got into psychology? You used to go to a medical school and were ready to become a doctor, is that correct?

– I first started getting familiar with medicine back when I was 15. To gather up some experience prior to entering the university I started working at the serious patient department of City Hospital 81 in Moscow as a nurse. Back then I realised that medication and appropriate treatment are essential but psychological behaviour patterns help just as much. Despite working on weekends and night shifts I was popular among the patients. One of the bedridden women once said ‘Marina is here, so I’ll survive’.

Then I went to Pirogov Medical Institute and got my master badge in cycling. Sport psychology was in its early stages of development at the Central Institute of Physical Education where I got my second degree. It was home to renowned professors and great professionals. This way my life became strongly tied to sport psychology. I taught this newly formed subject and worked with Soviet teams. I was the first to teach future sport psychologists and launch a dedicated department in the USSR.

– Coaching has developed on the basis of sport psychology, hasn’t it?

– It wasn’t referred to as coaching back then although it used the same mechanism of aiming for a better result. A true athlete should aspire for more, and the coach helps them to do so, while the psychologist helps the coach.
I have a book titled “How to Make Strength Stronger: Coaching”. My method is based on the fact that people are subconsciously aware of their problems but not always realise how deep the matter goes or how to solve these issues. I aim at helping people feel the strength that will help them deal with the hardship, set forth and accomplish new tasks. Talking to a consultant the client gets better at understanding themselves and getting even with their unique features which may seem like drawbacks at the start and ultimately achieving more.

– The books you’ve published are bestsellers. “Business Is Psychology” has been republished 25 times. “Our Poor Rich Children” got out in 2017. How did you come up with the idea of writing it?

– I focus primarily on the people’s needs. Back when I needed to understand the patterns of entrepreneurial behaviour “Business Is Psychology” was born. Then my clients realised they wanted to self-analyse and answer questions like ‘What am I?’ ‘What do I live for?’ and ‘What do I aim for?’ That’s how I came up with “How to Make Your Strength Stronger: Coaching”, “Success Is a Personal Matter” and “Complex Matters Explained Simply”.

Time passed and my clients realised their children had grown up and those turned out different from what their parents had wanted them to be. The kids had no real desires, they did not want to start any business, instead they wanted to party and enjoy themselves. Where did this come from? How not to make any irreversible errors in the process of educating children?

Some of my clients are millionaires and even billionaires. They come to me to ask on how to find a CEO so that they could step aside. And we find the solution in a matter of minutes. The rest of the time we dedicate to their children… I first wrote “The Secret of the First Year of Life”. I realised that many problems stem from the fact that starting from the very early days parents trust their children to nannies who work in shifts. A strong affection, the main thing that is supposed to form during the first year of life, fails to form. Later on a more overwhelming work came forward, “Our Poor Rich Children”. My newest book “Leave Your Kids Alone! Simple Rules of Wise Parents” is scheduled to be presented at Moscow’s international book fair in September. The first book of the series helps understand children’s needs, while the second one describes negative factors that influence the parents. The third one talks about more personal questions like how to build boundaries, how to give freedom to your child, how to counteract bullying at school, and how to steer them away from contemplating suicide. The main thing I want to get through is: we the parents are raising the next generation and raise ourselves at the same time.

Marina Melia

– Coming back to “Our Poor Rich Children”, why are our children poor?

– They are rich because they have all of their material needs catered for, and more often than not they have more than they need. Take a look around their rooms: you’re bound to see clothes they’ve never worn, toys they’ve never played with and things like this. Fully formed personalities are not really affected by wealth while children are very much affected by it. Naturally, parents make efforts to make their beloved offspring happy: they take them to expensive malls, hire personal coaches, and squander money on them. However, the child still fails to get proper soul connection and love. Parents’ attention is replaced with gifts. In this regard the children are in fact poor.

– It turns out one should start from themselves. However, it might be hard to change an adult person…

– People may start developing only when they want it. Every time I hear parents complain about their children I stop them right away. You can’t achieve anything by affecting people directly. One needs to focus on themselves instead. Fi we set rules for the family, do we adhere to them? Let there be few rules and limitations, but one has to be consistent. For instance, if a boy wastes all of his pocket money allowance, he doesn’t get any extra money. However, more often than not a kind mom tops up her son’s card every time he asks her to.
There should be freedom, and there should be boundaries. Parents shouldn’t set a strict schedule for the kids. Do we want to raise a leader who would be able to make decisions and create? Then why do we put him into the car and drive him from one class to another? Does he then have any time left to think, fantasize, or dream?

– How do we find the balance?

– Kids need to have some time for themselves free of any occupation, even boring time, if you will. We also need time to talk to the children. This is mandatory! The rest of the time might be dedicated to, let’s say, three classes: a creative one, an intellectual one, and an athletic one. This way we are more likely to find out what they really like.

– How should one explain the refusal to give the child what they really want? It’s more or less clear if the family cannot afford it and says ‘we have no money for this’ or ‘wait till we get the salary’. How should one put it to an almost adult person who realizes there is money for their needs?

– It is somehow an assumption that children need to be explained everything since the very first days ‘you’ve got to because reasons’. Truth is, certain things should not be explained. The question ‘why’ is normally replied to with ‘because’. Because we don’t do this sort of thing in our family. One of my clients was worried about explaining why her child had no father. ‘Because this is what our family is like’ is the best explanation. The world is not homogenous.

– Have you seen examples of parents openly telling their kids to ‘get a summer job and earn your first pennies’?

– I have, but not many. It is quite exotic so far.

– Why does it happen?

– Truth is, there have not been more than two generations of wealthy families. They were taught to struggle through a low income and count the days till the payday. However, they were never taught to deal with wealth. I’ve always told my children ‘Picture your house burning down. What do you have left? Your health, your skills, and the knowledge you got. You will still have your relatives you talk to, your friends, a motivation, and a desire to move forward. This is your true capital’.

We will eventually come to the realities of wealthy Western families: a calm attitude to luxury, and children’s involvement in charity from an early age. In the situation described sending kids ‘to get a summer job’ would not look realistic. Even though a month-long work as a waiter or a shop assistant would help the kids get some very important social skills.

– How should one teach the importance of volunteering?

– It depends on the parents. Should the child hear their father say ‘I’m going to a charity foundation because…’ or ‘I need to help…’ they will learn about it. The way we treat people of other ethnicities, creeds, and material state are perceived by children from an early age. The best way to teach people to be kind and charitable is real help including charity donations. You may take your child to an event, hospital, or a retirement home. If this is regular in the family, it will be for the children as well.

– What inspires you? How do you find strength and what helps you?

– It’s a combination of three elements: ‘I want’, ‘I can’, and ‘I must’ which I call ‘the magic triangle’. I want to pursue this as I take interest in it; I can do it as I can spend an hour doing what others wasted years on, and I must do it as people need me. Sadly, I cannot consult everyone, and this is why I write books.

– Marina, you transfer your book-selling earnings to the “Dom s mayakom” (“Building with a lighthouse”) of which you are a benefactor. Please say a few words about the foundation. How did it come about and what does it mean for you?

The foundation came about when my son Alexey came home with a girl with whom he had volunteered at a children’s hospital, Lidia Moniava. Now he works at the Medical Pedagogic Centre. Recently he published a great book titled “The World of Autism: 16 Superheroes”. Lidia had a dream of founding a children’s hospice. I witnessed her starting it from scratch. Becoming a benefactor for the foundation was the next logical step. I have three kids, and I believe there is nothing more terrifying than knowing that your child has an untreatable disease. It is even worse to realise you cannot do anything to help it.

– Do these kids stay at the hospice or at home?

– We do our best to let them stay at home. The worst thing is when a child is put into intensive care, and they become immovable. Back at home they are around their siblings and parents. We now have an inpatient facility with 15 wards. Last days are the hardest ones, so it is better for the patient to stay away from home. Doctors, nurses, nannies, psychologists, game therapists, and coordinators are always around them. This more of a palliative care as opposed to a real treatment. There are many ways of relieving the pain and make families’ life slightly better. We hold many events: we take the patients to river journeys, summer camps, and get hairdressers for their mothers. Should the kids want to see a star perform for them, we invite them. And they come over.

We are currently holding an initiative called “Children Instead of Flowers” where we encourage families to buy a single bouquet per class and donate the rest of the money to charity. Last year we raised 20 million Roubles. This is a nationwide initiative and a great effort.

Why do I believe the aid should not be directed? You may come to a family and give them some money but that would not always yield the desired result. The necessary aid cannot always be arranged by a single person. Medication, nappies, drop bottles, artificial lungs, wheelchairs, and many other materials are required. It is more effective to keep a family provided for by a foundation.

– How one can help the foundation?

– There can be any sort of aid, and anything helps. Our website has a list of things we need. The foundation provides an opportunity to make good deeds. We need regular donations, even if they are small. Picture many people making small but regular donations.

Stephen Ridley used to be the real Wall Street wolf: young, charismatic, big earner. One day he left a large investment bank and started playing piano in the streets of London. This is where the story of his success started. In the last five years the whole world learned about Stephen. He has toured across 60 countries earning 500,000 fans around the world. He has finally come to Moscow to open a local branch of his academy and bring his music over.

Stephen, please talk a little bit about your life and give an introduction to yourself. You’re a very interesting person. You had worked as a trader before you became an artist, hadn’t you?

I started my first business when I was six. I was selling sweets at school. In two weeks’ time I was making more money than both of my parents, and I got kicked out of school because all of the kids were addicted to sugar. And then I understood that it was not normal. And I wasn’t interested in living like everybody else because everybody was unhappy. And I’m just desperate for more than school or business was giving to me. What is success? I had a poor background living in a village. And I decided that what make me happy is being extremely rich. So I needed to get a really nice job. So I went university, I got really good marks then I got invited to a top investment company and now I do this. And I was miserable. I had everything and still I went like ‘Hey, I do everything the advertisement tells me I need to do to be happy’

So you understood the spirit of time and the fact that you weren’t satisfied with your life?

Definitely. I tried to not see it. I closed my eyes and pretended like everything is okay. But really I would panic. I thought ‘shit, is this my next forty years? Is this life for me? Is this success?’ If this is success than I’m fucked. Throughout all of my life success had always been in the future — ‘one day it will be good’. Now I’m here and I don’t know what I’m gonna do. So I was very quietly panicking. I was underneath a thin shell. I didn’t know if I was going to become an artist and I needed to find a solution. I left the bank at 11 o’clock in the morning. At 11:30 I saw a piano in a shop and thought ‘that’s what I want to do’. After I quit everything looked interesting. I saw a guy painting a wall and thought ‘that’s interesting’. I saw a taxi and thought ‘I love driving and talking to people so maybe I should be a taxi driver’, I saw a guy making coffee and though ‘Oh I love coffee so maybe I should do this’. Then I saw a piano and though ‘that s just what I need to do’. I felt like I was in shock and needed to detach. So I sat down and started playing and I was in paradise. And the guy comes over and says ‘if you wanna play it you need to buy it’. And I said ‘Alright’. It was an antique shop and the piano was really cheap, about 100 pounds. We dragged it out in the street, it was really heavy, and I started playing in the street. It was incredible. The street was full. Everyone was happy and I felt amazing. Instantly, within an hour my life completely turned around. First I was an unhappy banker than I’m a musician in the street. For five minutes I felt like Robbie Williams because the street was full.

But you have played piano your entire life, haven’t you?

Yes. I started when I was two and I was self-taught in the beginning. Then I went to the best teachers and understood that the subject is too complicated. Why are they talking in Latin? Why are there so many symbols that don’t mean anything? Why do they have so many rules that don’t relate to playing? And why does everybody sound the same? Something didn’t make sense. And I started losing the piano and thinking ‘maybe I don’t like this. It became an intellectual thing and I got the idea that I couldn’t play. It went downhill from there. At the age of two I loved it, at seven I loved it, at nine I still loved it. But the more lessons I got the less passionate I was. I went to a better school and realized I didn’t love it, then I went to the best school and understood that I really didn’t love it. There was a period in my life where I stopped playing for maybe about four to five years.

Did you forget anything about how to play? I heard that musicians should practice every single day.

There is some misinformation about piano. When I say I didn’t play I would still play as a hobby. Every week or two I would play a song. Before that I used to practice for six hours a day. It’s like driving: you don’t need to drive every single day to remember how to drive. You don’t need to cook every day to know how to cook an egg. The reason people forget how to play piano is that some of them learn by repeating with no knowledge. So as soon as they stop they are like an actor learning a script and they forget the lines. But when you understand something you don’t need to do it every day, you just understand it. That’s why I left the school.

Is this the way you got the idea of founding your own academy? Did you base it on your smart and sustainable way of listening to music?

Yes. We live in a world where even children don’t have two or three hours a day. They have their iPads, and their lives are busy. I understood that traditional education wasn’t going to work and that if we didn’t change anything we would have no pianists in twenty years. Secondly, I got tired of people coming to me after every concert with sad faces saying ‘I wish I could do something like that’. But it’s so easy! However, I don’t know how to tell you how to do it. So it sat in my mind for a long time. Third reason is I see so many people with so much potential that is trapped and not getting out. That’s because language is limited but feeling are very wide. There is a huge distance between the place where language ends and emotions stop. Music gives me the ability express the inexpressible. So I’m no longer trapped. I feel like a free person surrounded by slaves. I just want normal people to be able to have that.

Stephen Ridley

There must be many people who know what notes are but can’t actually play them. What level of musicianship should people be on to enter Stephen Ridley’s academy and what will they be able to play upon graduating?

The academy doesn’t teach how to play a song. Instead, we teach how to play any song. We offer full understanding of piano and musical theory which lies in the base. Academic methods don’t cut the mustard. We don’t force our students to practice for hours or learn tens of useless subjects. There are four courses.

‘Scale Master Class’: almost every pop song in the past twenty years has been based on just two scales. There are over 20 scales, all of which reflect a certain emotion. Some pend years to study the scale while the most important ones may be learned within three hours.

‘Piano Master Class’: I don’t force people to go to sit in classrooms for hours. Any person from any corner of the world may learn to play piano. We have recorded around 100 simple videos that don’t ned to be learned. Instead they help to understand the instrument and start playing.

‘Intensive Motivation Programme’: I know how hard it is to keep the motivation going, that is why we have a specially designed course to keep you in the moment of wanting to let everything go. It is like an adrenaline rush.

Finally, the ‘Musician’s Self-Development Programme’ is designed for those who aspire to become a professional musician whether they want to earn this way or just play for their own pleasure.

Will your students have any exceptional options of playing with you at shows upon graduating?

Yes, they will. The piano course is online. The artist course is delivered in person during a four-day boot camp. We go out in the city, and we are together. I know that I’ll get a lot of eyes this way. I’ll start my own record label to sign these people and some of them will definitely play with me. I’m creating my own army. I’ going to make a lot of them really popular.

I hope one day I’ll have more free time to try your method.

The course takes three minutes a day for six to twelve months. It’s faster than anything ever created on the planet. 150 times faster than any other course. Pretty cool, huh?

Amazing! Do you find the meaning of life in what you do? I don’t think it is correct to call music your job.

Do I find it amazing? Yes. Do I find the meaning of life in it? No. I have an artist programme. An artist is someone who thinks differently. People find love and meaning to everything, while an artist doesn’t find, he creates. He doesn’t look for love, he creates it. He creates purpose instead of looking for it. He doesn’t wonder if it’s the meaning, he creates meaning. It’s an attitude towards life. Everything is a creative flow. This conversation is creative. There was nothing before it here, now we’re creating something. It’s like a muscle. If it is really strong, it applies to every area of your life. Still now I have six businesses, I build houses, I have a crypto fund, I buy CEOs and sell their companies, I play music 90% of my time. How do I manage everything? I just create.

Do you have business assistants?

Each project has its own team. One of them has 135 people, while this one has only two. However, I am 100% sure this will become the biggest thing. Crypto-fund is niche. There is no passion. Nobody gives a fuck about crypto. Nobody gives a fuck about houses either. Even I don’t give a fuck about them. I just did it because my brother needed help. But people do give a fuck about music. They care about emotions. That’s why they spend so much money no concerts. They care more about entertainment than education. Jay Leno gets paid more than any teacher in Los Angeles. Why? Because people care about entertainment. They need someone who could eject us from our life. It’s one thing to go see a concert but it’s another thing to make a concert by yourself. It’s a long answer but did I find meaning in music? I created it. I didn’t find meaning in the school either, I also created it. These things matter. They are worth my commitment.

What is your key to success? Many managers diversify their businesses and make creative projects as well. But not everybody becomes as successful as you are.

I have several friends who are artists, and they’re broke. They always ask me ‘how do you do this?’ And the first point of the artist course was to teach existing artists how to make money. But then I thought it’s better to call it ‘how to make money creatively’. Then I went further back and now I have a programme that teaches everything.

To answer your question about what the key to success is, first thing is self-awareness. Most people don’t have it. You really need to be able to see yourself from an exterior point of view and change it like you would change your living room. But people are often stuck. They are full of fixed ideas and the same ways of operating. I’m not one of them. ‘I know I can’t do that’ — that’s it, you’re trapped in a box. It is a very important skill. You can’t learn it in a business school. And I didn’t learn them in business school. I learned them by playing Ray Charles songs. He’s a black guy with a raspy voice and I was a white guy with nasal voice. So I saw myself from the exterior and realised that I needed to change myself in order to play this beautiful music. I had to change the way my throat worked, I had to sit right. Ray Charles is fearless, and I had a lot of fear. Back in investment banking I saw that everybody was scared. And I thought I would make myself valuable by being a guy who is not scared. I could see that the environment needed someone who would sit in front of a client and sell something. This is how I was voted #1 investment banker in my category in all of London. And then I quit the next day because I was able to see what was needed and what was wanted.

Stephen Ridley

I think you have a strong character. It’s also important.

It wasn’t always the case. I am a strong character because I needed to be. I could see that what the world needs is not a weak person. And I could see that in all of my projects being scared and lazy would not bring success.

Did your life change completely after you quit investment banking?

Everything changed. I left my job, my apartment, my girlfriend, I saw some friends for the last time and I’ve never seen them since. Because I looked at my life from the bird’s eye. I didn’t like anything about my life. This woman was with me because I was rich and bought her stuff. We didn’t love each other. She was hot and I just loved having sex with her. And I was rich and also good-looking so she also liked having sex with me. I didn’t see her as the mother of my children. I didn’t even like her as a person. She was mean. I didn’t like my job because it didn’t make me happy. I saw my friends, they didn’t really like me, they just liked getting drunk with me because I’m fun when I’m drunk. . I had a car and I didn’t like it either. It was hard to drive, and all the time I was only worried about paying for this car. I had a flat in a penthouse with a swimming pool and I only had it to impress people. I hated cleaning it, and I didn’t like paying a cleaner to do so because she stole from me. And I was always bored at my place, I wanted to go outside and see the world. So one day I said ‘screw it’ and left everything in one day. Boredom is worse than unhappiness. The worst feeling to me is not caring about your day. It’s not natural to me. My father passed away when he was 50 and full of dreams. And I don’t want to experience the same. I need to be fast. As soon as see something I need to act. I did this job for 1,5 years and I still wasn’t happy. I should have quit after the first day because I saw it and I was too scared to admit it. Now if there is something I don’t like I just change the conditions.

Was it difficult for you to change your life after you left the bank?

It was the best time in my life. I was happy. I felt the love of the world. Nobody smiles when they do investment banking. Nobody says ‘thank you’, nobody gives you a hug, nobody is happy to see you. And I felt the same. And then suddenly I fell in love with people because I gave them something, and they gave something to me. It was truly beautiful. I was happy. I didn’t care what my fake friends or my gold-digging girlfriend would think. I started making real friends, really ng cool people.

You travel a lot. Which countries do you like best?

Italy is obviously the best. On day one God made everything. On days 2 to 7 he finished Italy. I love Brazil. I really love London. The more I travel the more I appreciate London. I love St. Petersburg — what an amazing city.

How do you handle the stress of travelling? You’re in a good shape. It must be difficult handling such a hectic schedule.

Who told you that? Travelling is a privilege. I sit on a plane and write a book or read a book. I’m in a tin 40,000 feet above the ground with the best view of the planet and eat some food. I don’t know what is tough about it. I get tired anyway but I’d rather get tired doing something I love. I only have a human body that needs sleep and sometimes wants some sex.

Stephen Ridley

Do you have a schedule?

Yes, I do. In Russia I don’t do it but I should probably start doing it. In London I have a 15 minutes to 15 minutes schedule. I know what I’ll be doing for the next 15 minutes every day. I have two guys who work with me and we plan the next day by the end of each day. I treat time like water. I give away money very easily but I don’t give away my time as easily. Last year I gave 50% of my money to charity but I didn’t give away my time. Moscow is pretty busy so I probably need to start scheduling. Before I only came here for holidays. But now I have goals. We have exactly the same 24 hours in a day as Steve Jobs did or LeBron James does now. But successful people don’t waste their time watching Netflix for three hours. I didn’t understand it two years ago when I was living a Bohemian life. I feel more responsible for my ambitions and goals. They will genuinely fail if I don’t take action. Having a great idea is not enough. If I don’t do this I will die like 99% of people — pissed off and full of regret. I want to be proud of what I do. I want to sit years from now and be proud of making 10,000 artists and watching my academy being tagged all over Instagram.

What is your main goal in life for next year?

I don’t think in short terms. I could break down a ten-year goal. I would mostly like to have a million eyes. That’s the minimum. The music itself doesn’t have to be super famous but I’d really love for people to listen to it. I don’t want to make a shitty song and put it into a Pepsi advert but I really want people to see it. I would really like to be known by people who make great art. Worldwide. That’s the goal. I would genuinely like to be known as someone who wants to help the world. Partly it’s because of my own ego and partly because I feel like it’s the best use of what I am.

Have you ever thought about making a concert with the use of new technologies?

At least once a day I get an email from someone saying ‘do you want to make a concert using 3D mapping or where everybody wears IMAX?’ And I say no. I want the opposite of that. I used to teach meditation which means intense focus. Look around you. There are too many sounds and colours. Our senses are overloaded. I want just one sound at my concerts, not even ten instruments. Just me and the piano. I want it to be spiritual. VR is the opposite. It wants you to concentrate on a tiny screen. And it’s fake. I want real things like pieces of wood hitting metal strings. I want my shows to feel like they were made 100 years ago. Ideally I want candles instead of white lights. The most important things in life are timeless. I guarantee that love felt exactly the same 10,000 years ago. Music is primitive. I don’t want to cover it in tinsel and sparkles.

Do you plan any shows this summer?

Yes, some amazing shows. I’m playing some festivals, the opening of Monaco Grand Prix, the Riga Jazz Festival which to me is the best jazz festival on the planet, I have some very cool shows in LA, next week I’m playing for Kim Kardashian, and I’ll probably be doing my own course. Summer is always busy. Mostly spinning in Europe.

“The only thing I don’t have time for is bad taste”

Vincenzo Brandonisio

Immaculate suits, softest leather, luxurious fabrics, a rich palette of colours and textures: this is the Vincenzo Brandonisio brand with its charismatic founder’s personality behind it. Signor Brandonisio is one of Italy’s first designers to consciously study the global experience. It’s no surprise his clothing lines are crazily famous among the Moscow’s fashion connoisseurs!

Signor Brandonisio, you are part of the modern Pantheon of fashion creators. How did you climb all the way to the top?

It’s not about fashion. It’s about elegance because the latter is eternal. This is the most important thing in my life. Let’s start with the very beginning of my understanding of fashion. I was born in Parma, the most French city of Italy. My father and I had a workshop. When I was six my father took me to Florence where he planned on purchasing a collection. I remember a very elegant lady in a black dress with a white collar. He asked my father, “Signor Brandonisio, can the kid stay with us?” He said, “yes”. This was one of the most memorable moments of my life. This was the moment I saw Emilio Pucci himself step out of the Pitti palace. He even shook my hand. Every time I take a walk in Moscow I laugh. I don’t want to sound pretentious, I love everybody, but I laugh at the fake Italian names. There is a word “pontovatsya”. Are you familiar with it?

It’s a Russian word, isn’t it?

It’s a conglomerate of bad taste. I still can’t wrap my head around how they manage to do it. Maybe the reason is the fact that fashion didn’t even appear here until twenty years ago. I have been doing it my whole life. This doesn’t make me a genius. I just learn every day. That is the secret. The only thing I don’t have time for is bad taste. Also for pretentious people. The rest is philosophy.

At the start of my way I had the purpose of finding the true meaning of elegance. I wanted something more than just dressing people in high-quality clothes. I had the purpose of turning them into true icons of elegance and beauty. I can say I’ve been pretty successful at it.

Let’s continue the story about the designer’s way. So my father sent me to Oxford to get a degree in commerce that is of no use today. However, I made some use of this knowledge as I came from far away and from the most French city in Italy. I started understanding the rest of the world. I was surrounded by Argentinians, Israelis, Arabs, the French, and many other nationalities. I was amazed by the elegance of the Argentines. They donned blazers and dined with candle light. The food was horrid but that didn’t matter. The French talked about brandy while I was getting familiar with the world outside. I learned to spot the beauty around me. At the age of 18 I decided to leave Oxford. This is how I started working for a British-American company Chester Barrie founded by Simon Ackerman. The company made Brioni-style suits but with a British touch. Do you know Tom Ford?

Of course! It’s one of my favourite brands.

Tom Ford is a genius. He copied Burberry’s and Chester Barrie’s styles but I still love what Tom Ford does as he brought elegance back. I started working for them in Italy from scratch. Before that I worked at my father’s shop but at Chester Barrie’s I started as a delivery boy. Slowly but steadily I got promoted to the design department and finally became a couturier. I learned a lot about fabrics, about why a certain type of fabric might not suit certain occasions, and about clothing in general. This approach is not used nowadays. Lately I’ve walked down Rodeo Drive and noticed that Bijan, Brioni, and Battaglia put their jackets at the windows. The rest put out lady’s shoes, Ralph Lauren polo shirts, winter jackets, and sports clothes. Nobody wears suits in Los Angeles. Going back to my story, Chester Barrie taught me to make suits. I am not a tailor, but I understand how to make them. I don’t know if it’s good or bad. Simon Ackerman, a well-known British entrepreneur of Jewish origins decided I needed to go sell clothes in Souther Italy. We chose the toughest region. You have no idea what it means to sell in Sicily, Calabria, or Apulia. I valued every single minute because I had fun. I met very demanding people. Sicilians may be elegant and bright but have a good taste at the same time. This is where I learned to put two and two together. I saw amazingly dressed people.

I love my craft. I’ve been doing it for a long time, and every minute brings me joy.

Don Vincenzo, where did you learn about elegance that you have mentioned earlier?

My father first took me to England when I was 9 years old. I remember seeing a tall gentleman with a mustache and puffy white hair in Oxford Street. He was wearing an overcoat thal looked tailor-made, a brown bowler hat, and a bowtie. Ragazzi, I had never seen a person as stylish as him. AS I said earlier, you are either born elegant or you sell hot dogs. One might live a life without learning about elegance. I ended up crossing the entire Italy from north to south. Everywhere I looked like a peacock, and everybody noticed that. In Naples I met the best shop owner ever. I remember the joy I felt while working with the people of fashion and models. The work at Harrod’s was my absolute favourite. We created a valuable product, and I was already advertising my own name. Looking at how serious I was at work Mr. Ackerman told me: “It’s time for you to go to the States”. At that time Sachs and Barney’s were already buying European products for low prices. We figured even if we get three billion no’s we will still get one yes. We undertook an experiment. In the USA I walked from door to door with a suitcase and practically started what the company had already been doing in London from scratch. Three thousand no’s and maybe one yes. I had to deal with the most different customers including Americans of Jewish-Italian origins, the worst customers in the world. Then I travelled to Florida. Miami is the city of Scarface, and it looked just as it was shown in the movie. There I had 30 customers who bought crocodile leather shoes and cashmere, and paid cash for the most expensive items.

Are you still friends with the Bush family?

Yes, I am. And not just with them. My most impressive customer was the Sultan of Brunei. When we started our business in Russia I asked my partner: “Which direction would you like to go in, classic suits?” In the end we decided to go for fashion. I still love this enterprise as it is my baby. You should have seen this place 12 years ago. These were the first days of new Russia. You could see one or two dandies dressed like French ladies of the XVIII century. This style must have been revered back then. But we brought some Bijan philosophy over here.

Don Vincenzo, what would you say about Russian women fashion-wise?

Oh you Russian ladies, I admire you! You are a rare breed of women who are used to working hard. You understand everything from the get-go. My work is not even necessary here. However, I can surely say that every designer needs a muse. In Russia I am inspired by you, ladies. Your firm faith in yourselves, your view of fashion is mesmerising!
I create my clothes with my heart, but a truly good character is born when I know it is necessary. One might think, what is unique about this brand?

What is?

The people who love wearing it. The real Italian design and the spirit of my collections is nothing without the love of my clients for fashion and luxury. This combination creates the golden middle between haute couture and daily clothes.
You know, some say the love that grows stronger with time is nothing but affection. The real love is fire, a storm, and everyday madness. This is the way I want my brand to be. Every day I want to create more and see more elegant people around me. This is the secret of true success: just love what you do.

Chantal Roos contributed to creation of the most famous perfumes by Yves Saint Laurent with the likes of Opium, Paris, Jazz, and Kouros. Later on she worked with Jean Paul Gaultier and Issay Miyake. A passion for the perfumes and a large experience in the field pushed towards the creation of the first collection of own perfumes. Chantal Roos decided to create her own trademark of niche perfumes that is now titled Dear Rose. Having founded her own brand back in 2014 Chantal Roos found a perfect business partner, her daughter musician, singer, and songwriter Alexandra. Her music career has brought special traits and specialties to the brand. In particular, Alexandra inspired the new collection titled Song.

– Alexandra, what do you think about Moscow? How often do you come here?

– I love Moscow but I don’t know it really well. Now I know the area where my hotel is pretty well. I only know the area around my hotel called La Petit Maison, it’s a beautifrul place with a cosy atmosphere. Еслинеошибаюсь, вМосквеявчетвёртыйраз. If I’m not mistaken, it’s my fourth time in MoscowI also went to St. Petersburg. But this city is different. I love the area that I’ve just come from.My mother used to ask me as to why I travel alone to which I replied that I am very happy to be alone. Now I have my routine: I arrive, then I jump into my Saint Denis bath, I stay there for about two or three hours, then I go to TsUM to get groceries…

– Do you like travelling alone? Does it help get a better grip on the local culture?

– I do feel the culture indeed. I don’t have my daughter or my husband with me so I can do anything I’d like to do for myself. I like to walk a lot and I take the metro here unlike in Paris. Here it’s clean while in Paris it’s awful. Moscow metro stations are beautiful.

– Please tell us something about the history of your beautiful family business.

– Our company is called Roos & Roos because my mom is Chantal Roos and my name is Alexandra Roos. I was brought up by a Parisian woman who had begun her career in fragrances a long time ago. Back in 1977 she launched Opium with Yves St. Laurent. I might say I was born into the perfume business because she has always been doing this. I myself was a musician and I did music for over 20 years.–

– How did you come up with the idea of founding your own brand?

– My mother left the position of the CEO of YSL Beauté. I’ve always been a fan of niche fragrances, and my mom was looking for niche fragrances before. So it’s really traditional with a know-how brand but with a contemporary vision. It’s a feminine brand which is very important because, as I told Anastasia, there aren’t that many feminine brands. I think it’s crazy. If you look at fashion mostly sometimes you have Stella McCarthey or Phoebe Philo but most of them are male brands. So this gives us a different point of view.

– Have you had any prejudices to fight in the industry? Was it hard to find your place?

– It was difficult for me because I’m a daughter of one of the biggest legends in the industry. The difficulty is also about being an entrepreneur because she has always been an employee even if we’re talking about the highest possible level. It’s not that easy to start your own business in the field of perfumery. But in the end we did it, and I think it’s okay now.

– Is it hard to work in this industry beign the daughter of a legendary woman?

– The problem is that this will always happen anywhere. People will always say “oh yeah, it’s the daughter”. I don’t know about here but in France when you sell meat the sign reads “de père en fils” meaning “from father to son”. So the perception is ‘his father was doing it so maybe he knows the business too’. I feel that in the field of art it is not the case as people will always look down on artists’ children. And I find it stupid. If you’re a daughter of someone from this business that means there is a transition and there is confidence and it means you grew up with this, If you’re not good you won’t stay there for a long time. There is always this tendency. I did not have this because we are in a different filed — niche perfumery. My mother didn’t know this sphere very well. Even though it’s still about fragrances, it’s a different business. The distribution is different, and there is a lot more creativity. This is good because we are using her experience and my creativity. It’s a two-headed monster that works really well. Maybe people talk behind your back, but I couldn’t care less.

– What do you think is the most difficult part of making your own perfume and what are the peculiarities of a high-quality fragrance?

It has to be of a high quality like you said. Thanks to my mother we were able to work with one of the biggest bulk manufacturer, Firmenich. It works with many perfumers, one of them is called Fabrice Belgrand, he’s the one we are working with. He’s the nose who used to work for a big company that my mother was in. He worked with Jean Paul Gaultier and Issay Miyake. They opened the door for us so it was easier. The most important thing is, your fragrance has to be good. However, there are many good perfumes in the niche.

– How do you position yourself? How do you distinguish yourself from others?

– This is the question I ask myself sometimes. The day before yesterday I went to TsUM which is the same as Le Bon Marche in Paris or Harrods in London. I was proud of seeing my fragrance at Harrods but it got me depressed at the same time. I was thinking about how a fragrance could jump directly into the hands of a client. I’m a big perfume lover, and I can tell that there are many great fragrances at any brand. So how could we stand out from the crowd with our own fragrance? I have no idea. I believe it is the issue of loving the brand. You love it, you love its values and what it conveys, the bottle, and finally you would want to smell it.

– Is marketing everything nowadays?

– Not really. Marketing is what comes after the story of the brand. You should just have a strong story behind it and stand by it. Only then if you are good at marketing you can dress it nicely. But if you don’t have a good story to begin with it might be complicated. For example, I really like the story of Frederic Malle. That’s great. That’s Editeur de Parfums, […] is an editor of books, he was the only one putting the name of the perfumer in front. The story just writes itself. And to this day I don’t think anyone else puts the name of the perfumer on the packaging. You have to love the brand, understand its values, and then you will smell the perfume. Sometimes there is one or two fragrances that are just incredible. For example, Santal or Le Labo. Nobody knows why. Baccarat or Francis Kurkdjian. However, it took them a while to get there. They’ve been here for several years. And then suddenly you love the brand, make a good work, and they are still there. Then there is one fragrance that skyrockets them to fame. You get there step by step. Just like everything in life works.

– After all, aren’t your fragrances better than other niche brands?

– people have it a bit, some people have more. Somebody asked me, ‘tell me about your perfume, what makes it better than others?’ Thing is, they are not better. They are different but I definitely can’t say that they are better. We do our best, we work with Fabrice Belgrand, the famous nose in France who also worked for Diptyque and KILIAN and he’s from Grasse. His father was also born in Grasse. So as far as the know-how is concerned, we have it.

–Which qualities should a fragrance possess?

– First off, on the side we put everything about quality and competence because everybody in the business has it. It should have a character, something different to tell. Just like Santal or Baccarat. They are just different. It’s like when you are cooking and you don’t know what you’re making but in the end the dish turns out really good. A little miracle.I don’t think it would be any good if all the brands were coming to you and saying ‘I want a best seller’. As if I weren’t trying to make one. A perfume should have a spine. All of our perfumes have a spine but maybe one day a new fragrance will have a stronger one. A perfume doesn’t live on the side. It lives in the general world. So it has to have a strong spine to fit the current trend and then remain a memorable perfume. I remember when my mother launched Issay Miyake it was niche at the time. No-one could even pronounce the name of the guy. My mother went crazy about that. When minimalism arrived Odissey Pure Water was there at the right moment, a fragrance with a strong spine. I think it’s got a lot to do with the trend, with what’s in the air, and a good quality work behind.

– Could you please say what the right way to apply a fragrance is? Not many people know it.

Really? I think you should do how you feel. Of course, I wouldn’t put it on my nose or anything. And if I want to smell it during the day I would put it on my hands because the hands move. However, I have no idea what the proper way is.

Иногда хочется нанести больше. Но больше аромата — признак дешевизны. Sometimes I feel like putting on more. More, however, is cheap. If you don’t want to appear cheap you should put on a little. But if I like the smell I want to feel it. There are nice fragrances but if you want people to smell them they need come closer to you and smell your neck. But I like the trail.

– Is it necessary to change the fragrance seasonally?

I think people should do exactly what they want. Me, I like to change them according to my mood. I don’t think we have the same mood in winter and summer. In summer I feel more open and more developed. In winter I would put on a warmer perfume that would be like a second skin.

– Do you usually plan on launching a fragrance during a certain season?

Only one. We have a perfume called Sympathy for the Sun, a homage to the Rolling Stones, which relates to summer because of its name. The story is that back in the 70s the Rolling Stones came to Southern France for a recording session and later they wrote Sympathy For The Devil. That is our homage, so it should be a perfume suitable for the French Riviera. Only that one is seasonal. Otherwise, not so much.

– Coming back to tendencies, is there any trend for the current season?

The trend for today is leather and wood. We have a woody fragrance and we are going to do a leather-based item. This is the first time we are doing it. We have 12 fragrances and we have to think about what we have and what we need to do.

– Do you have any memorable stories about the perfume industry?

I have a funny one. One of our fragrances is called Bloody Rose and it’s meant for someone who has a lot of character. We told our perfumer the story: it’s a very seductive and dangerous woman. We said she is likely to leave a party with someone else’s husband. He comes back with some trials. We smelled them, and all of them were very heavy. So my mother said, ‘Fabrice, this is a very dangerous woman; she’s wearing a lot of makeup; her mascara is too sharp, and she’s got too much breast. We have a different vision’. Do you know Carla Bruni? Our vision of a dangerous woman is Carla Bruni. She’s very pretty but dangerous so you never know if she’s going to leave with your husband. So could you please go back to your laboratory and work again. That was my funny story. He’s a man and we are women, so we have a completely different vision of what a dangerous woman could be.

Aleksandr, how did your football career start?

I was sent to Dynamo football school in Barnaul back when I was seven years old. My parents wanted me to practice sports, and I choose football. You might say it was love at first sight, or first touch. I haven’t missed a single training session without a serious reason ever since.

Every achievement has its roots in the childhood. What did you dream about when you first started playing football?

I don’t think I had a big dream when I was a kid. I just didn’t want to leave the pitch. I didn’t let the ball go even at home. I learned new tricks in the living room. I hit the walls so hard my parents had to fix them quite often. Lamps were my frequent victims too. My friends and I used to watch the local senior team Dynamo and dreamed of reaching their level. I got even more motivated to train after I had been admitted to FC Lokomotiv academy in Moscow. I competed with stronger players of my age so I progressed much faster. I started thinking about a professional career and my future development.

Was this experience difficult for you? How hard was it to reach the top level of football?

My first days at Lokomotiv academy were quite hard as I was far from home, my family, and my friends. My parents could not afford flying over to Moscow often so I used to travel back to Barnaul only a few times a year during semester breaks. However, as time went by I became a part of the team. Many boys at the academy came from elsewhere. All of us lived in a boarding house so we talked outside the pitch as well.

Do you see football as an art? What would you compare the player’s work with?

If I’m not mistaken it was Ronaldinho who said ‘Football is a game, and all of us, no matter how old we are should remain children to play honestly’. It’s hard to compare football with any occupation. The only thing I know is to become a professional in any field one has to apply the maximum effort and love the profession.

What does playing at the World Cup at home mean to you?

It’s a great honour and a huge responsibility at the same time. It is most certainly a unique moment for any footballer. Nothing can be more inspiring than playing for the national team at the World Cup held in our country.

How ready is our national team for the World Cup? What are the goals of the team?

We have trained a lot for the tournament, and I’m sure it will pay off. The coaching staff analyses every player’s performance during the training sessions, and plans the work to bring each player to his maximum level. As far as results are concerned, I don’t like making forecasts. We have to be concentrated and aim for victory in our first match and keep moving forward.

You play for Russia’s top team — FC Zenit, an international squad with players from Argentina, Russia, Serbia, and other countries. How friendly is the team’s spirit?

It’saworkplaceatmosphere. Everyone does their best. No-one eases up on their partners no matter what nationality they are. We also talk outside the pitch. Sometimes we have family dinners. The Argentinians have learned a few words in Russian but still we speak mostly English with them. Those who have played in this country for several years speak the language quite well, Branislav Ivanovic for instance.

Youhaveplayedatmultipleclubsinyourcareer. How has your social circle changed recently? How hard is it to tell someone who is sincerely interested in talking to you from those who are around simply out a lucrative interest?

I’ve got good friends at all of the clubs I’ve played at. We often call and text each other; sometimes we meet during season breaks. I’ve got friends in Barnaul with whom I started playing football at Dynamo school. We’ve been friends for over two decades. I don’t remember ever being disappointed in a friend. I’ve been lucky to meet great people in my life.

How important is it to have the support of your friends and family in your day-to-day life? Could you please give an example of your friends supporting you when you needed it?

It is very important in fact. True friendship shines through in the darkest moments. However, my main supporter is my wife Veronika. We have been together for over 10 years. We have been through a lot. I love her and I’m also thankful to her for all the happy and not-so-happy times we’ve been through. I’d like to tell a positive story. On my birthday Nika brought together our parents and old friends, and each one of them made a short video with congratulations. Those to amounted to 30 minutes of footage. The videos were made in different parts of Russia and other countries. It was amazing and heart-warming!

What clothing style do you prefer? Who takes care of your wardrobe?

Veronika advises me on what to wear for different occasions. She hints on what I should buy at clothing shops. My usual style is casual or athletic both of which are comfortable for me. I love trainers, I wear them more often than any other type of shoes. Of course, if we attend a gala or an official event I wear classical suits. I’m not really passionate about brands, I just don’t think it’s an important factor when it comes to choosing clothes. If a T-shirt made by an unknown brand fits me I’ll pick it over a trendy branded item.

Not too long ago your son Fedor was born. What did it feel like to become a father?

I was ecstatic! I absolutely love spending time with Nika and little Fedya. Being a parent of the first child is a very emotional experience. We are learning to live a new life and take care of our child. Waking up to seeing him smile to his mom and dad gives me power.

Has your fatherhood affected your athletic performance?

I’ve always taken football very seriously so I can’t say I got any less concentrated. However, I was really happy to see Veronika and Fedya at the stadium for the first time. I scored a goal during that match. I believe my son brought my team luck.

What do you usually do at home? How do you like spending your leisure time?

Almost all of our spare time is dedicated to the child. We go outside, play, read books, and teach him. Veronika and I find time for one another to walk or have dinner. However, the season schedule doesn’t allow for much spare time. On tours I usually read books and watch films. The latest book I’ve read is ‘Relentless’, a study by an NBA coach on what makes an athlete great.

Charity and social projects are a positive modern-day trend. You arrange a children’s tournament in your hometown of Barnaul. How can it help little footballers become professionals?

Aleksandr Erokhin Cup in Barnaul is a great school of football and life in general. There are boys from all over Russia and some foreign countries who come to take part in the competition, make friends, play football and experience real emotions. A competitive spirit is very important for the development of young footballers. Lastly, everyone loves winning trophies. I remember all of the tournaments I took part in back when I was a kid and all of the emotions I felt.

Uruguayan singer and actress Natalia Oreiro who recorded an unofficial anthem of this year’s World Cup called you the sexiest player of the national team. What do you feel about this?

My friends and teammates have already joked about this. I appreciate it but I don’t take it seriously. I am concentrated on the World Cup.
