The first weekend of May is the time of one of the fashion world’s most important event: Met Gala Costume Institute’s event that attracts celebrities from all over the world.

Feathers, jewelry, flashy dresses, and Jared Leto’s head: The theme of Met Gala 2019 Costume Institute 2019 is camp that started a competition in extravaganza among celebrities.

The first ever Met Gala was arranged in 1946 by Eleanor Lambert who came up with the idea of New York Fashion Week. That was a charity event that collected funds for the Costume Institute and attracted the fashionable ladies and gentlemen of New York’s high society. Met Gala did not achieve its current chic until 1972 when its new manager Diane Vreeland invited that day’s most flamboyant celebrities including Andy Warhol, Cher, and Diane Ross.

In 1995 Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour became the new manager of the event. She managed to turn it into an exclusive party for fashion enthusiasts. She personally compiled lists of the guests entitled to walk on the carpet in front of paparazzi. Today the tickets might fetch up to $30,000 for the entrance and $250,000 for a table.

Every year the managers come up with an original theme that the guests are supposed to adhere to. A few days after the event Metropolitan hosts an exhibition named after the theme. In 2019 the managers got inspired by Susan Sontag. They chose the author’s “Camp: Notes On Fashion” as the this year’s theme. Sontag defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration”. This meant that the guests’ imagination had no limits.

The first to set foot on the carpet was Lady Gaga who switched four outfits. Katy Perry portrayed a crystal chandelier. Kim Kardashian wore a dress with a wet effect. However, the most surprising guests were men: Jared Leto carried a wax copy of his own head; Billy Porter wore a costume of the ancient goddess Isis; Vogue editor Hamish Bowles donned a lilac manteaux. One of the most memorable outfits of the night was displayed by Cardi B. The hip-hop artist wore a red dress with a large quilted tail made out of peacock feathers worth $30,000 and $250,000 worth of rubies.
