On the 3rd of March, Chanel presented its new collection during Fashion Week in Paris.
The main theme of the new collection was Freedom. The creative director of Chanel Virginie Viard took her inspiration from old images of Karl Lagerfeld and his muse Anna Piaggi. The models walked down the runway wearing Virginie’s interpretation of Lagerfeld’s chunky-heel boots. Virginie was inspired by Coco Chanel’s passion for horse racing. The designer mostly used a palette of blacks and whites and also showed some jockey inspired outfits.
The collection was mostly traditional but had some punk elements. The designer paid her respects to the classics and presented the house’s signature tweed skirt suits. Herewith, she elevated the collection by creating leather jackets and skirts and styling the outfits with massive jewelry.
The styling of the collection is worth mentioning. It was minimalistic but quite exceptional. Jewelry pieces such as necklaces and bracelets with pop up colors were shown on the runway.
In comparison to other brands, Chanel’s fall-winter collection was a little conservative and commercial. It may create an impression of Virginie Viard trying to rejuvenate the brand, but is afraid of going all the way. Perhaps, soon, the designer will go all the length and create something unexpected.
