The 72ndCannes Festival in Cote d’Azur started with the screening of Jim Jarmusch’s new film.
The opening of Europe’s most prestigious film festival always attracts media’s attention. The ceremony was hosted Javier Bardem and Charlotte Gainsbourgh. The international jury was hosted — for the first time in its history — by a Latin American, the famous Alejandro González Iñárritu, Oscar laureate and director of ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Revenant’. The eight-strong jury included directors Yorgos Lanthimos, Pawel Pawlikowaki, and the 21-year-old American actress Elle Fanning who is destined to become the voice of the young generation. The red carpet saw many celebrities who donned mostly conservative outfits. Only Eva Longoria, Romee Strijd, Braziian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosia, and Izabel Goulart preferred open dresses to “intellectual chic”.
The festival was opened by Jim Jarmusch’s ‘The Dead Don’t Die’, a zombie apocalypse movie which is not a traditional genre for Cannes. However, the movie engaged a lot of stars including Iggy Pop, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Steve Buschemi, Chloe Sevigny, Adam Driver, and Selena Gomez who debuted at Cannes’ red carpet.
The festival will last for almost two weeks, until May 25, 2019. The jury will evaluate 21 movies. This year’s Palme D’Or nominees are real stars including Pedro Almadóvar, Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch, Xavier Dolan, and Dardenne brothers. The most interesting is yet to begin.
