The local authorities of the Spanish resort Zahara de los Atunes, to protect people from COVID-19, decided to spray the beaches with bleach. According to Spanish ecologists, the authorities caused irreparable damage to the local ecosystem.
Bleach is a very powerful disinfectant commonly used to clean streets and asphalt. By spraying the beaches with bleach, authorities damaged the ecosystem by killing insects, and the tractors used in spraying destroyed the nests of migratory birds.
At the moment, the regional government is considering fining the local authorities for their actions.
