Kabuki on the Catwalk: Antonio Marras spring 2020 collection

Antonio Marras stunned Milan Fashion Week with a four-act love story between a Japanese princess and an Italian shepherd.

Sometimes fashion shows lack performances with the spirit of older shows by Vivien Westwood and Alexander McQueen. This time on Milan Fashion Week Antonio Marras was in charge for such performances. He brought a four-act show to the stage of Teatro Puccini. According to the programme that was handed out to the guests the performance was based on a fairy tale. A Japanese princess named Shiro (swan) engaged to an old neighbor miraculously appears in Sardinia and falls in love with a shepherd named Baingio. Marras combined Japanese and Italian theatre traditions.

The collection’s main motifs mimicked the ideas seen in the theatre performance. The catwalk combined the incompatible: patterns from ancient Japanese kimono and sporting chic, colour-blocking and mixed patterns and embroidery, leather and paillettes. Antonio Marras seemed to be the only designer capable of combining a Japanese princess and an Italian shepherd on one stage and making their love story believable while the trends taken from various styles and ages came together to create a consistent collection.
